What is California Proposition 65?

The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, better known by the name Proposition 65, was enacted in 1986 by California to protect residents from harmful chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harms. The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), part of the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA), is responsible for evaluating chemicals for placement on the Proposition 65 list. This list, updated at least once a year, has grown to more than 800 chemicals since its first publication in 1987.
